Pre Engineered Buildings(PEB)

During my internship at M and K Building Systems Pvt. Ltd, I gained practical experience and insights into the design and manufacturing processes of pre-engineered buildings (PEB), industrial sheds, godowns, factories, workshops, warehouses, portable cabins, and heavy steel fabrications. This experience provided me with a comprehensive understanding of PEB structures, their components, and the overall workflow within an industrial manufacturing setting.


What is a PEB Structure ?
Pre Engineered Building (PEB) is a concept ot structure having a high structural strength, economical design while it supersedes the conventional fabrication, it lowers down the stress of foundation, hence there is less cost in civil construction as well. They are made for factories, warehouses, showrooms , cold storage, workshop, etc. These are Pre-fabricated in the factory and assembled on site.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the Components and Building Elements of PEB Structures:
- Columns
- Rafters
- Purlins
- Roof panels
- Secondary components (sag rods, bracing rods, clits, brackets)

2. Study the Manufacturing Process of PEB Components:

- Shearing machine
- Pull-through welding machine
- Power press
- Threading and cutting machine
- Blasting booth
- EOT crane

3. Learn About PEB Structures and Their Components in Depth:

- Forces and loads acting on the structure.
- Types of loads and load transfer
- Joinery in PEB structures
- Surfacing processes (blasting and painting)
- Identification of components(Each component is identified By punching some notations or letters according to the type of component and the contract name.
- Bracing and painting processes

4. Understand On-Site Assembly of PEB Structures:

- Process of assembling components to form a PEB structure

5. Study Client Interaction and Project Workflow:

- Client inquiries and requirements analysis
- Design process by S-Tech
- Cost estimation and valuation
- Production process from material ordering to final inspection and dispatch

Key Tasks and Activities

Task 1: Understanding PEB Components and Manufacturing Processes

- Objective: Gain in-depth knowledge of PEB components and their manufacturing processes
- Activities:
1. Components Identification: Learned about the various building elements of PEB structures, including columns, rafters, purlins, roof panels, and secondary components like sag rods, bracing rods, cleats, and brackets.

2. Manufacturing Process:
- Shearing Machine: Observed the cutting of MS sheets into flanges and web into required sizes. Uses scissor like, angular shear action to cut metal sheets. Capacity upto 10mm thick and 6700 mm in length.

- Pull-Through Welding Machine: Studied the welding of flanges and web together into I or H sections. It is a automatic welding machine which welds flange and web together. Capacity upto 1600 mm width and 25mm flange thickness.

- Power Press: Understood the role of power presses in shaping components and punching holes for clits and brackets.
Capacity upto 75 tons.

- Threading and Cutting Machine: Learned about the threading and cutting of components. The steel rods are cut and threaded

- Blasting Booth: Observed the blasting process to create a rough surface for painting.

- EOT Crane: Studied the use of cranes for material handling which runs across the factory horizontally to carry the components from one place to another. Capacity upto 5 ton.

Task 2: Studying PEB Structures in Depth

- Objective: Understand the structural aspects and forces acting on PEB structures

- Activities:

1. Forces and Loads: Studied the types of forces and loads acting on PEB structures and how they are transferred.

2. Joinery: Learned about the different types of joineries used in PEB structures.

3. Surfacing Process: Observed the blasting and painting process for surfacing components.

4.Plans, Sections, and Elevations: Analyzed the plans, sections, and elevations of components and the entire structure to understand the overall process.

Task 3: On-Site Assembly of PEB Structures

- Objective: Understand the on-site assembly process of PEB structures
- Activities:
1. Component Assembly: Spent time on-site studying the assembly process of PEB structures.

Task 4: Client Interaction and Project Workflow

- Objective: Understand the client interaction process and project workflow.

- Activities:
1. Client Inquiries: Learned how client inquiries and requirements are handled.

2. Design Process by S-Tech: Studied how designs are made according to client requirements.

3. Cost Estimation and Valuation: Understood the process of cost estimation, valuation, and preparation of quotations.

4. Production Process: Followed the production process from material ordering to final inspection and dispatch.
